'It's like they never miss a pass': Swansea's Galbraith renews contest with City.

Ethan Galbraith grins broadly as he recalls the thrilling dying seconds of his team's stunning fightback triumph against Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup. That match ended with Galbraith briefly donning a supporter's spectacles following the post-goal scrum.

As the match entered added time, Galbraith cracked the upright with a long-range effort from distance, and the defender quickly slammed home the rebound before racing off toward the crowd to revel in the moment, with the crowd mobbing the players.

Remarkable Recovery

The result completed an extraordinary turnaround given Swansea had been behind 2-0 midway through the second half. Amid the delirium, there was some collateral damage. The midfielder recalled, "There was a supporter shouting out and Josh Key and I were puzzled: 'What's he on about here?' Then we saw the glasses. It was a bit of banter putting them on. We are on the pitch as footballers but we're individuals, too, so to have a joke with the fans is always good."

Manchester City Challenge

The result earned a next round match at home against Pep Guardiola's side on Wednesday, a club Galbraith pushed hard at the comparable phase of the FA Cup with Leyton Orient in February. He had an excellent perspective when Orient took the lead in spectacular fashion, with Jamie Donley's long-range effort from about long distance going in via the crossbar and the opposition keeper. It seems unfair that it was credited as an own goal.

"You would have wished they would've awarded it to him for having a go from that range," commented Galbraith, who began the game centrally before switching to right flank after they changed tactics. That meant getting to grips with Jack Grealish, with whom he exchanged jerseys, and the attacker was among the opposition who praised the way his former team attacked the game.

Guardiola's System

"Physically they are outstanding but even the fundamentals and basic skills, they can just perform consistently," Galbraith says. "It seems as if they complete every delivery and they understand how to control and slow down a game. You can think you're doing well and then abruptly they will just fizz a pass past your midfield without you even seeing. You have to be focused every second of the game. It requires a resilient mindset and focus just to stay in the game."

New Chapter

Swansea pushed to sign Galbraith in January and secured his signature to sign him in the summer in a significant move. He made a name as a popular figure across a couple of years at Leyton Orient and has rapidly done the same in Wales. At his previous team he reunited with the coach, who four years ago gave Galbraith his initial sustained opportunity in professional games on loan at Doncaster from United. Then came a loan at League Two Salford, before he departed Manchester United.

Learning Curve

"I was probably a bit naive going into professional soccer. I think many athletes would say development squad matches is entirely separate. Sometimes it appears play is circulated without real physicality. You see few tackles or duels. Once you start playing professional matches you have to adapt rapidly."

Country Call-ups

He has shown that growth for both domestically and internationally, shining for the Green and White Army, who are fighting to qualify for the World Cup next summer via the playoffs and for whom he has started the past five games, including two matches encounters against the German national team. His former international manager, Galbraith's former international manager, offered the ultimate compliment, saying he was Northern Ireland's "midfield general" given how he controls possession and his ability to spot a game-changing assist.

Early Days

This represents an incredible journey for the youngster from the Queens Park estate in his hometown, just outside Northern Ireland's main city, who was raised observing his dad, Stuart, also a engine room operator, play for a local club.

Manchester United Experience

Galbraith's sole appearance for the Red Devils came in the away trip in 2019, a European competition trip to the host city, where they competed on an synthetic surface and the stadium roof was sealed owing to conditions of -15C. "This represented a long trip and it was chilly," he comments, chuckling. "The preceding week, the academy prospects practiced as a group, so that aided our adjustment. Just to accompany the senior squad and earn some playing time at the end was incredible."

Departing Old Trafford

What was the challenge was it to leave United, the club he joined from Linfield aged 16? "The decision proved quite easy, because I reached the point where I realized I wasn't going to make it at the top level. I'm hugely grateful for the years at the club but it reached a stage where I felt I needed to go my own route, join a smaller club and play first-team games. Now I'm slowly progressing again."

New Environment

This occurs during the middle of the day at the club's training ground but Galbraith has somewhere to be at the early evening: a learner's exam, another step towards getting on the road. Prior to relocating to the local area, the 24-year-old was a constant rider in Swansea's so-called fun bus, a minibus driven by team personnel, the transport team, which ferries players to and from sessions and fixtures.

"It's myself the Portuguese player, Ronald, the midfielder – a former passenger used to be in it but has started driving. It's enjoyable to spend time with the guys but I'm aiming to be the subsequent individual to stop using the bus and on the road. The Portuguese player enjoys practical jokes; he's always up to all sorts."

Fan Interactions

When he represented his former club, Galbraith would blend in with supporters on London's Central line after beginning his trip at his base. "I tried|I attempted|My aim
